Hilary Duff Biography

Hilary Erhard Duff was born in Houston, Texas, on September 28, 1987. She was raised between Houston and San Antonio because of her father’s work. Hilary and her sister Haylie took singing, dancing, and acting classes as children and participated in local theater productions, as well as a touring production of the ballet The Nutcracker. The sisters began to show more of an interest in show business and demonstrated their talents, so they moved with their mother to California in 1993 to begin auditioning while their father remained in Texas to take care of his business. At the age of eight years old, Duff began homeschooling in order to accommodate her budding career. Both sisters booked several commercials and modeling jobs for clothing brands.

Duff’s first major role came in 1998 when she booked the lead in Casper Meets Wendy, playing a witch who befriends a ghost, based on the Harvey Comics characters. She won the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie or Pilot for her supporting role of Ellie in The Soul Collector in 1999. After making several other television appearances, Duff was cast in the title role of the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire. The series premiered in January 2001 and had an estimated 2.3 million viewers per episode. She quickly became a household name, especially as Disney released toys, dolls, video games, books, and more related to the series. While still starring on Lizzie McGuire, Duff starred in Cadet Kelly, a Disney Channel Original Movie, in 2002.
