When you think about Ari Aster, the first two movies that come to your mind are Hereditary and Midsommar which were released in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Both these movies were incredibly successful amongst viewers as well as being critically acclaimed, and they really put this unique director in the same group as Martin Scorsese or Christopher Nolan, despite having made fewer movies than them. Now, he’s back with another movie and this one is going to blow your mind, and yes, we are going to be talking about Beau is Afraid.
Beau is Afraid has been classified as a surrealist comedy horror movie, which already makes it sound incredibly interesting, but there’s a lot more to it that will have you questioning different aspects of life. Beau is Afraid was officially announced in February of 2021, and now almost two years later, we’re here finally talking about it. So, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about Beau is Afraid, from the plot to the cast to the release date and much more:

What Is The Plot of Beau is Afraid?
If you have watched Aster’s work, you know Beau is Afraid isn’t going to be like any other movie that you have watched so far. Even with a few details and a trailer (which we will discuss later in the article), it is difficult to summarize Beau is Afraid, because there is just far too much happening, and until and unless you don’t actually watch it, you won’t understand it. Some of us had to watch Hereditary twice to fully grasp it, so Beau is Afraid might just take a few watches. Nevertheless, we will try and talk about the plot in the best way possible so you have an idea of what to expect before you watch Beau is Afraid.
The movie Beau is Afraid revolves around Beau who needs to make an important journey to go see his mother. Beau has been described as “an extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and never knew his father.” So, if this tells us anything, it’s the fact that he has had a complicated relationship with his mother, and now, as he is about to embark on this journey to see her, it is a lot more complicated than one can imagine when Beau gets hit by a stranger’s car, and after that everything that happens is beyond weird.
Beau is Afraid tells a story that spans decades and shows us different versions of Beau, and the different weird and supernatural things he must fight and overcome to complete his journey. It’s all his fears coming to life, or at least that’s our takeaway from what we know about this movie so far. A24, the production company for this movie has an official synopsis that goes as follows:
“A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster”

The Cast of Beau is Afraid
The main character in Beau is Afraid is going to Beau himself and is being played by none other than Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix has gained a lot of popularity since he played the role of Joker in 2019. By the looks of it so far, Phoenix seems to like the best fit for this role, and if you look at his career trajectory, it is full of complex and interesting characters, and Beau definitely fits the bill. We can’t wait to see what Joaquin Phoenix brings to the table.
The supporting cast for Beau is Afraid is also brilliant, and as the movie progresses, we will get to witness how each of these characters fits into Beau’s life. Some of the cast members who will be joining Joaquin Phoenix are Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, Haley Squires, and Richard Kind amongst others. Armen Nahapetian will be playing the role of young Beau!
When and Where Can you Watch Beau is Afraid?
Beau is Afraid has been talked about for a very long time now, and Ari Aster’s last movie was released in 2019, and then the pandemic hit. So, despite the wait, Beau is Afraid is finally here, and we can guarantee that the duration of the movie will make up for the lost time. Ari Aster described the movie as a “four-hour nightmare comedy.” Now, we don’t believe that the movie will actually be four hours long, but if they have to cover decades’ worth of nightmares, it will at least be 120 minutes. Beau is Afraid will officially hit the theatres on the 21st of April, 2023!
Is There a Trailer for Beau is Afraid?
The official trailer for Beau is Afraid was released recently, and this trailer will explain exactly why we have been talking about this movie in a way that is so complex to understand. Beau is Afraid is going to be a complex movie, full of rollercoasters that you can’t prepare yourself for and this trailer is proof of that. The comment section of the official trailer of Beau is Afraid is filled with praises for Ari Aster and his mind which goes beyond our understanding, but that’s what makes brilliant movies like these for us to consume, and we are more than grateful. The trailer is only a glimpse into what you can expect from Beau is Afraid, and showcases innocence, violence, colors, and most importantly, a journey. Also, we cannot end this section without appreciating just how brilliant Joaquin Phoenix’s performance looks in Beau is Afraid, and who knows, there might be an Oscar on the way!
It doesn’t matter which genre you like or hate, because Beau is Afraid will be a mix of anything and everything, which means it needs to be on your must-watch list for 2023 because if it isn’t, you will definitely be missing out.
