Austin Robert Butler was born in Anaheim, California, on August 17, 1991. While attending the Orange County Fair, an employee from a company hiring background actors recruited Butler. After appearing in several commercials, he began to take acting lessons and invest more of his time in working. He began home-schooling to accommodate his work schedule when he was only in seventh grade. In the tenth grade, he took the California High School Proficiency Exam, or CHSPE, and scored well enough to finish high school around the age of 16.

When Butler was about 14 years old, he worked as an extra on several television series until he was cast in the recurring (yet background) role of Zippy Brewster on Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. He met his manager, Pat Cutler, through Lindsey Shaw, one of the leads on the TV series. Butler was cast in a guest-starring role as Derek Hanson on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana in May 2007.
